U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Daniel A. Soto relinquished his duties as the senior enlisted leader during a Relief Ceremony on Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz, Guam, June 11, 2025.

Soto was appointed on Feb. 16, 2023, and he made history as MCB Camp Blaz’s first-ever Sergeant Major since its official activation in 2020. Upon arrival, Soto has played a crucial role in strengthening the Marine Corps community on the island, fostering leadership, and enhancing readiness throughout the command.

“I want to show you what right looks like - I want to show you Camp Blaz,” said Soto. "These young men and women are charged to come out here every single day to make a difference, to be good stewards, and to represent the Marine Corps and Camp Blaz. They are out here to protect the Indo-Pacific, so you and I can sit here at ease and at peace. This is because of Marines like this behind me standing in formation. They don’t miss a beat."

During his tenure, Soto was integral in the establishment and operationalization of the installation. He was instrumental in the relocation of the first Marine Corps unit from Okinawa, shaping key policy decisions and strategic direction, and supporting quality of life improvements to enhance morale and operational readiness.

“Sgt. Maj. Soto’s leadership, vision and unyielding commitment to our Marines and sailors shaped not only operational success but also elevated the quality of life for every Marine and Sailor under his charge,” said Col. Ernest Govea, commanding officer, MCB Camp Blaz. “He set a standard of excellence that will endure for years to come.”

During the ceremony, Soto recognized the selfless support of his wife, children, and mother and the sacrifices they make year after year so that he can continue to lead Marines.

“We are going on 22 years in the Marine Corps, and this is going to be our 8th duty station,” said Soto. “Every single day I come to work, and I am who I am because my wife supports me.”

Soto was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal (gold star in lieu of third award). He was also inducted into the Army’s Order of Saint Barbara which is awarded to those who have demonstrated the highest standards of integrity, moral character, and professional competence in the field of artillery.

“You’ve shaped the very soul of this base, and you’ve challenged us, you’ve inspired us, and you’ve always upheld the standard,” said Govea to Soto. “On behalf of Camp Blaz, thank you for standing the watch. You’ve always led by example and your legacy is secured here. Your watch as the Sergeant Major of Camp Blaz is complete.”

Soto enlisted as a rifleman in January 2003, and since then, he has served in dozens of key billets. He has deployed numerous times to include a Unit Deployment Program in Okinawa, Japan; Embassy Security in Kabul, Afghanistan; Operation Iraqi Freedom; and Operation Enduring Freedom. Following his relinquishment of duties, Soto will serve as the command senior enlisted leader of Marine Aviation Training Support Group 23.

“Serving the Marines and the mission has defined my career, and it is with immense honor and privilege that I served as the first Sergeant Major of MCB Camp Blaz – the first new Marine Corps base in nearly 70 years,” said Soto. “This base is more than just increased capabilities in the Indo-Pacific; it’s a testament to the commitment and resilience of every Marine and sailor who has contributed to its creation. I’m proud to help build a foundation for future leaders and to ensure the Marine Corps’ enduring presence in this vital region. Viva Camp Blaz! Viva Guam! Viva the United States Marine Corps!”

An appointment ceremony for Camp Blaz’s next Sergeant Major will take place later in the year.
